Art as a Tool for Healing, Connection and Memory: My Personal Experience
Each piece of art I create tells a story, captures an emotion and becomes a bridge between the past and the present, helping my clients find comfort, joy and peace.
Art as a Tool for Healing, Connection and Memory: My Personal Experience
Art has the power to transcend everyday life, to awaken deep emotions, and to help us get through difficult times in life. But it takes on a special meaning when it allows us to reconnect with memories. As an artist, I have discovered firsthand how art can soothe the soul and help us overcome emotional challenges, as I did when I created a portrait of my mother.
Personalized art is not just a way to decorate our homes, but a powerful way to reconnect with our memories, immortalize family bonds, and heal emotional wounds. This article explores how authentic art can have a powerful impact on emotional and mental well-being.
Art to Revive Positive Memories
When my mother passed away, one of the biggest challenges for me was to overcome the memories related to her illness. Like many, I had in mind her last days, marked by suffering, the feeling of injustice, this terrible helplessness. And I was afraid that these moments would end up taking over everything else. I did not want the illness and this last image of her in her coffin to erase the memory of what she was.
When I decided to take out some photos years later, I found a shot of her where she was sticking her tongue out, joyful and mischievous, dressed in 60s-70s tones. And I decided to make a portrait of her.
By creating this portrait, I transformed the pain of loss into a healing process. Each stroke of the pencil brought me closer to her, each detail brought back happy memories, including those in this photo, which I could not know, but which suddenly became mine too. This is how I rediscovered the connecting power of art.
I found, no longer my mother, but a woman in her entirety, in her own experience which was foreign to me and of which I finally perceived the full extent. With each stroke of the pencil, I had the feeling of literally "giving life back" to the person she was, by capturing a faithful image of her true nature, of facets of her that I had previously ignored, of her youth, her personality... This allowed me to replace dark memories with lighter and more joyful moments and to discover another person with an existence filled with experiences and mysteries, a whole being with a unique and complete story.
Art to Overcome Grief and Find Inner Peace
This creative process had a profound effect on my emotional well-being. By focusing my energy on creating this portrait, I was able to transform the pain of grief into a gentler experience. The work that I created was not just a visual representation, but a way for me to reconnect with my mother, and somehow, to feel her also at peace. Something, a sensation, always swarms inside me when sadness takes over: a guilty feeling of communicating this pain to the deceased, wherever they are or not, and preventing them from being free; holding them back in their suffering or our suffering. Making this portrait gave me a feeling of lightness, of peace. She was finally finding her own identity, whole, detached from the memories of my only experience and my only emotions. I had the impression of freeing her at the same time as I was calming myself.
For many, creating or owning a portrait of a deceased loved one can play a similar role. It helps maintain a connection, retain a symbolic and comforting presence, while also allowing them to be remembered in a positive way. Art becomes both an emotional and memorial medium, facilitating healing, rooted in sincerity and kindness, values that I cherish in my work.
Humanism and Sincerity as a Source of Comfort
As an artist, each work I create is an attempt to capture truth and raw emotion, without embellishment or artifice. For this portrait of my mother, it was essential for me to render the essence of her personality with honesty.
This is where humanism takes on its full meaning in art. A work created with kindness and truth allows viewers to reconnect with the human, with emotion. When we are faced with an authentic portrait of a loved one, we are immediately transported to a memory, a moment in life, which can nourish a feeling of inner peace.
A portrait has a unique quality that makes it much more alive and present than a photograph. Personally, I find that photographs, although they capture precise moments, can often arouse difficult emotions such as sadness or anger. They freeze reality in a way that can be brutal, recalling lost moments or painful memories. I don't always like to look at them. I prefer to leave them preciously where they are.
A portrait has this special ability to transcend the simple frozen image. It does not only capture a moment, but a spirit, an emotion. It becomes a tangible presence, almost as if a part of the person's soul was integrated into it. Through the strokes of the pencil or brush, the artist puts something deeper, something personal and intimate, which gives the portrait a life of its own. It is this essence, this "bit of soul", that makes a portrait so special and easier to contemplate. It is not just about seeing, but feeling the presence of the other through a living work, creating a bridge.
A Sustainable and Eco-Responsible Souvenir
To make this portrait even more symbolic, I chose to print it on wood. This allows me to materialize this tribute in a way that respects my values and her love of nature, she who only thought about having a beautiful garden. Creating a work that is both ethical and emotionally significant adds an additional dimension: not only am I remembering my mother, but I am doing so in a way that reflects our shared values. The medium, like the choice of photography and artistic technique, plays an important role in the perception of the portrait and its meaning. It is an additional way of paying tribute to the person.
The use of eco-responsible materials, for me, is not limited to a simple question of sustainability or a trend, but it is a way of adding a dimension to a work that is itself loaded with meaning.
Humorous Art: When Humor Lightens Difficult Times
Whether it is to overcome a bereavement, immortalize a moment or simply reconnect with positive memories, art offers a path to inner peace. It acts as a mirror, reflecting not only the image of the loved one, but also the emotion and love that he or she continues to inspire.
Whether through a classic black and white portrait, a humorous colored illustration, each work can tell a story, revive a memory and, above all, bring tangible comfort into the lives of those who contemplate it.
Art can also be a way to bring lightness in difficult times. The satirical or humorous style in my works sometimes helps to lighten the atmosphere and bring a touch of cheerfulness in emotionally tense situations. This allows us to celebrate not only the memory of the person, but also their sense of humor and joyful spirit. The decor, the staging, adapt to the personality of each person, can represent their passions etc.
This is how I created another portrait in the 60s-70s tones of this photography. My mother, feminine and flirtatious as she was in her youth, goes on an adventure on her two-wheeler. Because, if she did not have a driving license, she had nevertheless traveled a lot on this kind of machine. I had no trace of that, had never even seen it. I was able to bring this missing memory to life. When I look at this portrait, I feel her free and happy. Me too.
An Intergenerational Connection Through Art
One of the most moving aspects of personalized art is its ability to create an intergenerational connection. Family portraits become visual heirlooms that span the ages, allowing future generations to connect to their roots. A family that wishes to preserve the memory of their ancestors through portraits sees these works not only as decoration, but as a testimony to family history.
Whether it is a portrait of a grandparent, a parent, or even a four-legged companion, each piece becomes a pillar of memories. It allows children and grandchildren to discover or remember their loved ones through a work of art that captures not only the physical features, but also the personality and essence of the person.
Conclusion: Personalized Art as a Tool for Emotional Healing and Lasting Connection
Through my personal experience and work as an artist, I have discovered that art goes far beyond mere aesthetics. Whether it is to overcome grief, reconnect with happy memories, or strengthen family ties, personalized art is a powerful tool for emotional well-being. Combined with an eco-responsible approach, it becomes not only a means of expressing deep emotions, but also an ethical choice that reflects lasting values.
Each piece of art I create tells a story, captures an emotion, and becomes a bridge between the past and the present, helping my clients find comfort, joy, and peace.
By integrating artwork into our daily lives, we can transform our emotions, soothe our thoughts, and revive the deepest feelings. Art is an invitation to awakening, a way to reconnect with the world around us while finding peace and comfort in beauty.
