It is an invisible question. A hesitation I can sense behind many of the emails I receive: “Are we ‘important’ enough to get or give a portrait?”

It’s a quiet doubt, a sort of impostor syndrome applied to art. And honestly, I get where it comes from. We inherited this idea from art history: the drawn or painted portrait was for kings, nobles, the powerful. You had to rule empires to deserve having your face immortalized by an artist’s stroke.

But in my world, in the silence of my studio, the definition of “greatness” is something else entirely.

I refuse to reserve drawing for marble statues or LinkedIn profiles. A custom portrait is not a tool of power, and it’s certainly not a gadget to flatter egos. It is a tribute to real life. To your story, exactly how it has sedimented into your features.

The people I draw every day aren’t making headlines. They are anonymous, ordinary people living ordinary lives. But they are the ones who are truly “Great” in the eyes of those who love them.

For me, the greatness of a face is not measured by social status. It is measured by the truth of its gaze. That is where my work of micro-meditation begins: when I take the time to observe every detail, it detaches itself from global judgment to become a unique celebration.

• It is not a general; it is a companion animal or a loved one whose passing we want to accompany with decency, transforming absence into an artistic and comforting presence.

These simple stories deserve to be preserved. They have as much, if not more, value than the portraits in the gilded frames of museums.

Simple Tools for Authentic Lives

This philosophy translates right down to my way of working and the materials I use. I don’t use solemn oil paints or gilding. I draw with simple, almost school-like tools. Tools that belong to the daily life of each and every one of us.
